DIY Waterfall Braided Bun by Hair Romance

Have you entered our current giveaway for your chance to win a copy of Hair Romance second ebook yet? If not, you can still enter right here.

The ebook features step by step picture tutorials as well as full written instructions for over 30 braided hairstyles, along with lessons in all the braid basics, tricks for braiding your own hair, tips for curly and fine hair, a braid troubleshooting guide, and more.

Today, Christina (the lovely editor and gorgeous hair behind Hair Romance) is sharing the full tutorial for one of the hairstyles of her 30 braids in 30 days challenge: the waterfall braided bun.

1. Part your hair and starting on the right hand side, you want to make three sections and start to form a waterfall braid. If you don't know how to do a waterfall braid, you can find a video tutorial here.

Tip: The difference with this waterfall braid is that you want to angle it diagonally from the top right of your head down towards the lower left side. This style looks great with larger sections as shown here or you could do a very fine waterfall braid across as well.

2. Once you’ve reached the lower left side, pull your hair into a ponytail but leave the waterfall sections loose.

3. Gently scoop up the waterfall sections and twist them into the ponytail.

Tip: You want to leave the waterfall sections a little bit loose so it looks like they’re curling under.

4. With the shorter layers on the first few waterfall sections, use bobby pins to secure them in place if they don't reach the ponytail on your hair.

5. Gently tease or backcomb the ponytail and pin into a messy bun.

Tip: You can stretch out your waterfall braid and pull it down to make it look more diagonal.

Variations: If your hair is very long, you can also braid the ponytail and pin it round into a braided bun. This style also works really well in short hair and you can either just do a short ponytail or fold the ends over into a small chignon.

What do you think? Will you give this hairstyle a try? I love how versatile it is, how it works equally well for parties and the everyday. And I'm wondering : do you think it's work appropriate?

Thank you so much Christina for sharing this tutorial and being such an hair-spiration!  Find Christina on Hair Romance, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest

  1. Oh! I love this. I have short hair, so I'm glad that it's supposed to work with it. Even if it doesn't, the little girl I'm au pairing has long hair that I do up every night, so we'll have to try that tomorrow night! And I wouldn't see why it wouldn't be work appropriate. As long as everything that you're wearing is work appropriate, this should work right in!

    1. Absolutely. If you can, practice the waterfall braid on a friend, then on yourself, and keep practicing until you get the hang of it. It's really just a matter of practice. If you really can't master it, you can try to do a waterfall twist (http://www.cutegirlshairstyles.com/hairstyles/time/5-10mins/waterfall-twist-beautiful-teen-hairstyles/) instead of the waterfall braid. It's pretty as well, and easier.
